Prompt & Done · RESET pack
The Long-Chat Reset
Your AI re-processes the whole chat every time you hit send. One prompt packs it into a note so you can start fresh without starting over.
1 The handoff-note prompt
Paste it into the long chat. Copy the note into a new chat.
We're continuing this in a new chat. Write a handoff note I can paste there so you can pick up where we left off.
Include:
1. Goal: what I'm trying to get done
2. Decisions: what we settled on, and why
3. Key facts: names, numbers, constraints, links, code or exact wording I'll need again
4. Done and next: what's finished, and the next steps
5. My preferences: tone, format, things to avoid
Rules: bullet points, under 200 words, only things we actually discussed. Don't invent anything. End with "Continue from here."
2 How to reset
- Run the handoff-note prompt in the old chat.
- Read the note and fix anything it got wrong or left out.
- Open a new chat, paste the note, then ask your next question.
Reset when you switch tasks, when answers start missing earlier details, or when you're close to your limit. The note is a summary: check it before you continue.
3 Make your usage go further
From Claude's help page on usage limits:
- Start a new conversation when a long chat is close to your limit.
- Put reference material in a Project: projects use retrieval, so only the relevant parts are loaded.
- Turn off extended thinking when the task doesn't need it.
- Pick a lower effort level for routine tasks; higher effort uses more tokens.
- Turn off tools and connectors you aren't using; they are token-intensive.
Why answers slip in long chats: Chroma tested 18 models and found performance degrades as input grows.
