Prompt & Done · CHATTERBOX pack

A free AI voice that runs on your own computer, cloned from a short clip.

Chatterbox is an open-source text-to-speech family from Resemble AI (MIT license). Give it a short recording of a voice and type a line: it speaks it. The narration of the reel was made with it. This page has the install steps, the six-line script, tips for the reference clip and what we measured on 22 Oct 2026.

1 Install

python3 -m venv .venv && source .venv/bin/activate # Python 3.11 is what Resemble tests on
pip install chatterbox-tts

Repo and README: github.com/resemble-ai/chatterbox. Models (Turbo 350M for English with sound tags; Multilingual V3 500M) download from Hugging Face on first run; for Turbo that is roughly 4 GB, so leave disk space.

2 The script (README usage)

import torchaudio as ta
from chatterbox.tts_turbo import ChatterboxTurboTTS

model = ChatterboxTurboTTS.from_pretrained(device="mps") # "cuda" on an NVIDIA GPU, "cpu" otherwise
wav = model.generate("Every word you heard was free. One prompt, and it talks in my voice.", audio_prompt_path="my_voice.wav")
ta.save("out.wav", wav, model.sr)

my_voice.wav is your reference clip. Resemble's README shows a 10-second clip; we used 14 seconds.

3 The laugh tag

Turbo understands tags such as [laugh], [chuckle] and [cough] (README). Try it as its own line:

wav = model.generate("[laugh]", audio_prompt_path="my_voice.wav")

In our test, 7 of 8 seeds of a standalone [laugh] came back as laughter ("Ha ha ha ha.", "Heh heh") when transcribed with Whisper large-v3. The other tags were less reliable: [sigh], [cough] and [gasp] sometimes produced stray words, so listen before you ship a take.

4 Tips for a good reference clip

5 What we measured (22 Oct 2026)

Apple M4 Pro Mac, Chatterbox Turbo 350M, PyTorch 2.6 on the Apple GPU (MPS), chatterbox-tts 0.1.7.

TestResult
A 5.0-second line, 5 warm runs (reference conditioning included in each)median 3.36 s to generate (3.18 to 4.19 s); the first call after loading is slower and loading takes about 7 s
Standalone [laugh], 8 seeds7 transcribed as laughter
No network after downloadworked (sockets disabled in the test process)

One machine, one reference voice. We did not run the multilingual model and did not compare quality with paid services.

6 Use it responsibly

Clone your own voice, or a voice you have permission to use. Chatterbox embeds an imperceptible Resemble "Perth" watermark in everything it generates (README), and the project asks you not to use it to do bad things.
